The Skill
Mood Boards
Mood Boards are a tool which I love to utilise, to provide clarity and direction to both myself and potential clients.
Creating these at the start of my design process also encourages consideration of materials and manufacturing process early on, aiming to mitigate the risk of developing concepts that lack engineering credibility.
Materials and Form
This example shows creating a design board focusing on Materials and Form, aiming to convey the soft, organic forms and fluid shapes.
Also demonstrated is a focus on clean, warm material choices.
This design board was used in my Pedestal Fan project.
Desired Aesthetic
Here the design board shows more focus on the general aesthetic I wanted my product to match.
Taking inspiration from the Memphis, modern 1980s era, similarities in form, colour and even material choice could be drawn from this.
This design board was used in my Food Blender project.
Materials and Manufacturing
This design board was used in a project where sustainability played a key component. Whilst developing this board, I also did a lot of research into sustainable material choices and manufacturing processes, results such as bamboo, and steam bending seemed viable options.
Desired Aesthetic
Predominantly concentrating on aesthetic, and inspired by a rustic, bohemian, interior style, allowed the emergence of clean, bright colours and unique, slightly complex forms.
Although this design board was for a concept I did not refine further, I enjoyed exploring and working in a different design style.
Materials and Finishes
Contrasting to the other material design boards, this one focuses more on material finish. Here I amed to convey a more rugged, industrial, end-product by incorporating rough, and contrasting textures. Creating an eye-catching design though strong lines and abrupt, contrasting forms.
